All Information Officers under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) IV-A (CALABARZON) were gathered together on March 10-11, 2020 for a Learning Event on Communications, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Planning, and New Media. An Information Officer from the Mines and Geosciences Regional Office No. IV (CALABARZON) was one of the participants, along with those from the Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENRO and CENRO) within CALABARZON. The said event was held at the NDN Grand Hotel, Sto. Tomas, Batangas, and was organized by the DENR CALABARZON Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO) to hone the information dissemination skills of the participants.

Different kinds of media are currently being used to spread news reports and communicate. With the people’s shifting preference to using electronic devices and the internet, they have moved from acquiring information exclusively from hardcopy newspapers to online articles. Because of this, one of the main topics of the event was newswriting. Guest lecturers such as Mr. Arnell Ozaeta and Ms. Tina Ganzon-Ozaeta gave tips and insights on how to effectively convey information to the public. As journalists who are focused on publishing hardcopy newspapers and online news articles, respectively, they emphasized the differences of the writing styles of the two media.

Another relatively new mode of information dissemination is through videos. These are particularly used for television broadcasting or online outlets including social media. Ms. Teepee Gile, an artist focusing on audio-visual communication, shared her knowledge on how to make videos using something as simple as personal smartphones. Acquiring the skill would help hasten the broadcast of events to the public.

With these learning activities, all offices of the DENR should be more effective at conveying information that would support its mission of mobilizing the citizenry in protecting, conserving, and managing the environment and natural resources for the present and future generations.
