In a symbolic gesture, newly appointed Environment Secretary Ma. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga formally took the helm of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in a simple turnover ceremony held at the DENR Central Office on 21 July 2022.
Undersecretary for Legal, Administration, Human Resources, and Legislative Affairs Ernesto D. Adobo, Jr. handed over the flag of the DENR to the new Secretary, signifying the latter’s humble acceptance of the duties and responsibilities of being the DENR’s steward.
“The DENR, as it struggles with its sometimes – conflicting roles in both conservation and development of natural resources, is fortunate that its new leader is not a stranger to the balancing acts necessary to achieve sustainable development,” Undersecretary Adobo uttered as he ardently welcomed Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga.
In her detailed yet succinct message, Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga clearly laid out all her colossal plans for the DENR. She urged each and every one to serve with excellence and virtue, while upholding shared environmental values with scientific and technical excellence.
“We want a stewardship that is democratic where stakeholders can participate, where there is transparency in the Department’s plans and decisions,” said the Secretary.
A push for the digitization and modernization of the DENR’s information management systems to enhance service delivery to stakeholders and maintain a high level of performance and impact, is also envisaged by Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga.
In addition, she stated that the DENR aims to build resilient communities through risk-sensitive and balanced development of resources; battle the climate emergency through practical climate change adaptation measures; and continuously protect the indigenous species as part of natural heritage while also harnessing resources for the benefit of the country, among others.
In her closing speech, Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga called for collaboration in this new course and mission, setting an auspicious pitch for her DENR leadership.
