Twenty-five (25) personnel of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region IV (CALABARZON) headed by its Regional Director, Engr. Samuel T. Paragas participated in the 63rd Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC) held in Baguio City from November 15-18, 2016 with the theme: “63 Years of Responsible Mining… Moving Forward by Doing it Right.”

The annual event, which was attended by thousands of stakeholders from the mining industry, kicked off with a tree planting activity at the Botanical Garden to express the miners’ commitment in environmental protection. On November 16, 2016, the 4th Community Relations Conference at the CAP-John Hay Convention Center was held along with the start of the mining exhibit which showcased the good practices of the mining companies as well as the latest technology and equipment used in the mining industry. In one of the presentations, mining companies were urged to continue the unification efforts currently being done by organizations and other stakeholders in the industry in defending and promoting responsible mining in the country as well as develop concerted efforts in IEC activities highlighting the importance and relevance of responsible mining.

The Minerals Industry Symposium and the 2nd PMSEA Student Congress were held on the 3rd day where fifteen papers were selected for presentation from among a number of entrees. The Mineral Industry Parade was held on the last day of the conference (November 18, 2016) starting from SM-Baguio to Melvin Jones Park. Eighty seven (87) contingents from different stakeholders participated which was more than last year’s number. The First Aid Competition, Hand Mucking and Fire Fighting immediately followed after the parade and some of the MGB IV CALABARZON personnel with safety trainings were among the judges in said events.

The week-long event was highlighted by the much-awaited Testimonial Dinner/Annual Awards Night of the same day at CAP-Camp John Hay Convention Center to give recognition to mining operations with exemplary accomplishments/performances on environmental management and outstanding safety performance.

For the Philippine Mineral Industry Environment Award, LafargeHolcim Aggregates, Incorporated in Region IV CALABARZON was accorded with the Titanium Award and likewise Runner-up in the Safest Mines-Surface Quarry Operation Category together with Montalban Millex Aggregates Corp who emerged as Runner-up under the Crushing Category. The PMIEA was established under Executive Order No. 399 on February 3, 1997 in compliance with the policy that mineral exploration and mining operation should be pro-environment and pro-people.
