The academe, with its commitment to provide effective remote learning activities amid the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, reached out to different mining companies as well as related and allied government offices for the latter to give brief talks and/or provide alternative academic learning materials (i.e., promotional videos and virtual tours), in lieu of the mine visits.

In line with MGB RO No. IV-CALABARZON’s thrust to establish linkages and strengthen ties with various stakeholders such as the academe, an online discussion was conducted on July 21, 2021 via Zoom platform. EM 149 (Minerals Industry Visit and Assessment) and EM 169 (Mine Plant Practice) students, along with Engrs. Christian Arranz, Francesca Cabanlig, and Rusloyd Lariba, Instructors at DMMME, took part in the said undertaking.

The technical personnel from the Mine Management Division of this Office centered the discussion on the standard procedures on the conduct of monitoring of Tenement, Safety and Health, Environmental Management, and Social Development (TSHES) compliance requirements. Other topics that were briefly discussed are as follows:

  1. MGB’s organizational structure, subdivisions, and major functions;
  2. Salient provisions of Republic Act No. 7942; and
  3. Common lapses of Contractors/Permit Holders/Permittees.

An open forum ensued after the presentation, welcoming questions from the students and the instructors, ranging from the programs and projects of MGB to the TSHES monitoring during the implementation of community quarantines. The students also raised queries regarding the Mineral Production Sharing Agreements, small-scale mining operations, and mining companies in CALABARZON Region.

The fruitful talk ended with motivating messages from Engrs. Arranz, Cabanlig, and Lariba, emphasizing that while the past two years have been a grueling academic voyage, they will strive harder to prepare the students once they launch their careers in a few months’ time. After which, the academe expressed their gratitude to MGB RO No. IV-CALABARZON for allocating time and for sharing awareness on the Office’s mandate.
