Technical Personnel from MGB IV CALABARZON led by OIC-RD Dondi M. Sarmiento conducted an IEC Campaign on the Salient Provisions of Republic Act No. 7942, otherwise known as the “Philippine Mining Act of 1995,” and its Implementing Rules and Regulations, to the members of Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of San Juan, Batangas on October 13, 2021. The IEC Campaign aims to inform and help the Sangguniang Bayan in crafting ordinances for the responsible utilization of quarry resources in cooperation with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office led by PG-ENRO Luis Awitan.

Engr. Edgardo Castillo, Chief – Mine Management Division, discussed the various regulations on mine permitting and tenement processing especially on permits issued by the Provincial Government thru the Provincial Mining Regulatory Board (PMRB). He expounded on the taxes derived from the Mining Industry as well as areas closed to Mining Applications. Meanwhile, Engr. Mark Anthony C. Perez from the Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division explained the environmental provisions of the Mining Act and expounded on the various environmental work programs and environmental funds that the Mining Operators/ Permit Holders need to establish in order to guarantee an environmentally responsible quarry operation. Lastly, Mr. Allen Clyde Canlas discussed the examples of geologic hazards and the control measures to prevent the occurrence of accidents arising from the hazard.

The members of the Sangguniang Bayan conveyed their appreciation to RD Sarmiento for initiating the dialogue which gave them a better understanding on the proper management and utilization of mineral resources especially that quarry resources are used in the “Build Build Build” Program of the National Government.
