On March 13 to 15, 2019, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region IV CALABARZON Regional Office staff underwent training for the use of the ArcGIS Pro software. It was conducted by the Lands Geological Survey Division (LGSD) of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Central Office at the Bayview Hotel, Ermita, Manila, Metro Manila.

ArcGIS Pro is a software used to create, manage, and share geographic maps, data and analytical models. The training was conducted to introduce ArcGIS Pro to the employees for the familiarization of its characteristics and functions. It includes the ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online and the ArcGIS Enterprise. The ArcGIS Desktop also encapsulates the ArcMap, which is the earlier used mapping program. Designing and editing can be done in 2D or 3D, and also, multiple displays and layouts can be set. The finished web maps can then be published in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise.

On the first day of training, the ArcGIS Pro’s basic characteristics and functionalities were explored. Sharing layers online and the editing of schema were also tackled. On the second day, the program was compared with how ArcMap works. More advanced functions such as layer properties modifications, display options, label features, and creating and sharing vector tile packages, as well as raster symbols and functions were examined. Lastly, on the third day, visualizing the data in 3D was taught. Later on, a spatial analysis was performed, creating an analysis model to determine schools that are at risk from storm surges and to identify shelter candidates.

The use of this software will be beneficial for MGB IV CALABARZON because it allows the easier access of the published maps and data online. The sharing and access of the data will not only be for the said region, but for the other MGB regions as well, allowing the centralization and higher precision of the data used by all MGB offices.
