The Mines and Geosciences Bureau IV CALABARZON, headed by RD Socorro P. Hernandez, together with Republic Cement and Building Materials – Batangas Plant conducted a Forum on Understanding Policies that Govern Mining Operations and Best Mining Practices that Promote Responsible Mining and a guided Plant Tour on June 30, 2017 at the RCBMI – Batangas Plant, Brgy. Mapulo, Taysan, Batangas.

The forum served as a platform to inform and educate the community about mining, help raise the level of awareness, and make them appreciate the advantages of mining in our daily lives. Also, the forum marks as one of the culminating activities of the Philippine Environment Month Celebration, with the help of RCBM – Batangas Plant.

The forum was attended by the MGB IV employees and staff of RCBM Batangas, headed by RCBM President, Mr. Renato Sunico, local government officials of Batangas, representatives from the academe, representatives from the religious sector, and other stakeholders affected by the cement plant operations in Batangas.

Topics discussed by Mr. Renato Sunico, Mr. Leo Robles, and Ms. Gina Ceniza for the RCBM Presentation include – Safety Briefing and Presentation of History of RCBM – from its roots, brands carried all over the Philippines, to other civic projects of RCBM to its host communities, which include medical and dental missions, road and bridge repairs, tree planting projects, etc. Also included is the discussion of Non-Metallic Quarry Operation and Utilization – from rehabilitation of the area to the measures which mitigate the negative effects of the quarry operations.

For the forum proper, the lectures on Social Development and Management Program were discussed by Engr. Anissa Madi while Engr. Mark Perez presented lectures on the introduction of the Mining and the Mining Industry, major highlights of the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and its Implementing Rules and Regulations, the Environmental Provisions of the DENR Administrative Order 2010-21. The last lecture was on Clean Air and Water which was given by Ms. Romiseth Perez from EMB-PEMU Batangas. Ms. Perez focused on the water quality and air monitoring guidelines, and the highlights of the Clean Air Act.

To further understand the manufacturing processes and quarry operations involved, the forum ended with a Plant Tour at the quarry site and cement plant facility of RCBM Batangas Plant.
