The Mines and Geosciences Bureau IV CALABARZON staff, headed by Ms. Celi V. Kennedy, conducted a series of Information and Education Campaign/Workshop on Geohazards last May 9 – 11, 2017 at the Calinisan Beach Resort in Laurel, Batangas. The MGB staff invited the local public officials of the barangays of Agoncillo, Laurel, San Nicolas, Sta. Teresita, and Talisay. The activity was done in order to educate, familiarize and train the municipal and barangay officials of the concerned municipalities for the possible natural risks.

The technical staff from the Geosciences Division presented lectures on Geohazard Mapping – what it is and why it is done, how to prepare for geological hazards particularly: Rain-Induced Landslide Hazards and Flood Hazards, as well as Basic Map Reading and Interpretation. These lectures, especially the Map Reading and Interpretation, will be very helpful for identifying the high risk areas. This would guide the community in properly planning the evacuation and relocation areas in times of floods and landslides.

Each barangay of the five concerned municipalities were given their individual geohazard Maps for their area plus flood and landslide posters to post on their respective barangay halls. Moreover, modules were given to each barangay wherein they are required to assess their susceptibility to landslide, flood, and coastal erosion and the population at risk. Each barangay were asked to update their geohazard maps, and locate their barangay halls and evacuation centers. In addition, participants were also asked to report on the geohazard risks which occur on their barangay.

Lastly, forms were distributed to the participants to evaluate the speakers on their presentation for the campaign workshop. Disaster kits were given to each participant of the workshop, consisting of a 3-in-1 pen, flood and landslide posters and their corresponding geohazard maps.
