A new surveillance operation by the National Bureau of Investigation-Environmental Crime Division (NBI-EnCD) together with MGB Region IV-A led to the arrest of ten (10) individuals on Monday (March 7, 2016) for illegally extracting “gravel/boulders” in Brgy. Sampaloc II, Sariaya, Quezon.

One suspect, named Arnel I. Alcantara, who claimed to be the manager of the group, stated that the mining site where the extraction is being undertaken belongs to Spouses Aristeo M. Ilao and Rosalinda E. Manalo who also owns the excavation equipment.

Mr. Alcantara also confirmed his lack of knowledge as to the mining permit.

Following the arrests, two (2) hauling trucks and two (2) backhoes as prima facie evidence in the area were confiscated including the illegally quarried minerals.

The 10 individuals were spotted quarrying “gravel/boulders” in a portion of land owned by Mr. Ilao himself who, surprisingly, is the incumbent and on his last term as Barangay Captain of Brgy. Sampaloc II, Sariaya. The said minerals are utilized for construction purposes.

The 10 apprehended individuals were brought to the NBI Office – Taft for inquest and filing of charges in the DOJ. Meanwhile, the confiscated minerals and two hauling trucks were duly turned-over to the Provincial Government Officer of Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office in Brgy. Calumpang, Tayabas City, Quezon thru Messrs. Ramil Gutierrez and Emmanuel I. Macalintal as custodian/receiving officer while the two (2) backhoes were under the custody of Brgy. Sampaloc II Kagawad Angelito P. Dalagin.

The operation is a partnership with the NBI – EnCD whose personnel were deputized by MGB IV-A last year to combat the illegal mining/quarrying operation particularly in the CALABARZON Region.
